The Devil trying to take my uncle?

This is a true story that happened many years ago when I was probably 7 or 8 years old.

I would love sleeping over my grandma’s house in East LA mostly because my cousins would be there. I remember this one night, it was my uncle, my cousin and I in the same room. It was pretty late and I was the only one awake. I couldn’t fall to sleep because I was scared; I always felt like something was going come out from under the bed and get me.

So, I’m just laying there trying to sleep when my uncle starts screaming for help and calling for his mom (my grandma) at the top of his lungs. And that alone scared me. He sounded like something was killing him. I remember his screams full of fear and anguish. But, that could have just been him having a nightmare.

What made that night terrifying was seeing my grandparents rush inside the room. My grandpa starts spraying holy water all around the room, on the walls and on my uncle. My grandma went straight to my uncle, who was still screaming but asleep all this time. She grabs him in her arms and cradles him and I could hear her praying.

And that’s when I think “what the hell is going on here?” It was like something straight out of The Exorcist. I don’t know if it was my imagination, but I remember the room being so cold even though i was wrapped up in blankets covering myself from head to toe in fear. I also remember there was just a bad, negative vibe in the room like if something was wrong here. This was not just a regular nightmare my uncle was having.

Eventually, the whole thing would die down. My uncle would stop screaming and he would relax. But he would not wake up; he would be asleep during all this. He would not be aware any of this was going on. It was as if he couldn’t wake up or if something was not letting him wake up.

So, the screaming and praying would stop and my grandparents would eventually leave but the negativity, the nasty vibe would linger. The bad feelings could have just been my imagination, I’ll admit that, but I don’t know…that night had stuck with me all these years very vividly.

This was the first time I remember seeing this but it was not the last. It would happen very frequently. The mornings after, my uncle would not remember any of it like if it just didn’t happen. I would never directly ask my grandparents what it was that was happening but they would say it was the devil trying to take my uncle.

Over the following years, those incidents would less frequently and less intense but it would still happen.

Growing up in a Mexican family, hearing stories of the devil taking people wasnt just a scary tale grownups would say to scare you. It was real. So when my grandparents would say it was the devil trying to take my uncle, I believed it. Whether it was my uncle having a nightmare or him being possessed or haunted and my grandparents exercising it, I have no idea but it certainly seemed that way at the time.
